The New Jersey Attorney General’s Office has disclosed information about a fatal officer-involved shooting that took place on May 27, 2024, in Keansburg, Monmouth County. The individual who lost his life in the altercation has been identified as 46-year-old Willem Roman, a resident of Keansburg.
According to reports, the Keansburg Police Department was summoned to conduct a welfare check at a property on Seabreeze Way at approximately 1:07 PM. Upon entering the premises, officers were confronted by Roman, who was reportedly armed with multiple weapons and wielding a chainsaw.
As Roman moved towards the officers with the dangerous power tool, Patrolman John Swartz discharged a taser, while Patrolman Tyler Manges fired his weapon, hitting Roman. Following the incident, emergency medical personnel immediately attended to Roman’s injuries and transported him to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune. Despite initially being in critical but stable condition, Roman sadly passed away on June 14, 2024.
