The University of Warwick Conservative Association (UWCA) has issued an apology regarding the footage, which allegedly shows attendees at a dinner hosted by the group dancing to Erika, a popular World War Two song associated with Nazi soldiers. A university spokesperson emphasized that “antisemitism has no place on our campus” and announced that Warwick SU has suspended the activities of the UWCA while the investigation is ongoing.
In the video, dinner attendees can be seen dancing to the music while shouts of “sehr gut” – German for “very good” – can be heard in the background. The UWCA has expressed regret over the incident and stated that the song was requested by an individual who will be banned from future events. The group also clarified that most attendees were unaware of the song’s historical connotations and pledged full cooperation with the university’s investigation.
In response to the controversy, the Union of Jewish Students condemned the gathering’s “blatant and unchallenged support for Nazism” as “utterly abhorrent”, calling for decisive action to be taken. They stressed that the glorification of the Nazis is unacceptable and must be unequivocally condemned by society at large.
The university has confirmed that an externally-led investigation will be conducted, with the findings expected to be made public within 90 days. A spokesperson reiterated the institution’s commitment to taking appropriate action if necessary following the conclusion of the inquiry.
