A child is in critical condition, according to Phoenix officials, following a hiking rescue on July 2.

Phoenix Fire Captain Shaun DuBois reported that emergency crews responded to a distress call around 2:00 p.m. on one of the trails at South Mountain. The victim, a 10-year-old boy, was suffering from severe heat-related issues and was located approximately one mile into the trail.

The child was swiftly evacuated from the trail and airlifted to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment.

Captain DuBois also disclosed that preliminary information suggests the child was accompanied by relatives, possibly visiting from out of town. They commenced their hike around 9:30 a.m., but these details have yet to be confirmed.

July 2 marked an exceptionally hot day in the Phoenix region. The National Weather Service reported that Sky Harbor recorded a morning low of 92°F, surpassing the previous record of 90°F set in 2010 and significantly higher than the average low of 83°F.

In light of this incident, Phoenix Fire authorities are advising caution to all hikers, particularly those unfamiliar with the challenging terrain.

“Some of the trails on South Mountain can be quite demanding. They are lengthy and strenuous, especially for inexperienced hikers, particularly those visiting from out of town who may not be aware of the level of difficulty,” remarked Captain DuBois.
