PHILADELPHIA (KYW) – The parents of a university student who tragically passed away in 2022 have filed a lawsuit against Panera Bread, alleging that the restaurant chain failed to provide adequate warning about the high levels of stimulants in their charged lemonade.
Sarah Katz, a student at the University of Pennsylvania, lost her life almost two years ago. Her parents claim that their daughter, who had a heart condition known as long QT syndrome, consumed Panera’s charged lemonade before her untimely death.
The college student collapsed at a Panera Bread restaurant in September 2022 after experiencing cardiac arrest. Despite being rushed to the hospital, Sarah could not be saved by medical staff.
Jill Katz, Sarah’s mother, expressed the indescribable pain of losing her daughter, stating, “It’s a very hard pain to describe because it’s a pain in your heart.”
Sarah Katz’s parents assert that she would have refrained from consuming the charged lemonade if she had been aware of its contents. Due to her heart condition, she had been advised by doctors to avoid energy drinks, as long QT syndrome disrupts the heart’s electrical activity.
According to the lawsuit filed by the Katzes, a large serving of charged lemonade contains more caffeine and sugar than a Red Bull and Monster Energy drink combined of a similar size.
The legal action alleges that there was no indication to consumers regarding the high stimulant levels in the charged lemonade, which was not marketed as an energy drink and was displayed alongside all of Panera’s non-caffeinated and lower-caffeine beverages.
The Katzes are sharing their daughter’s story to raise awareness about products that lack warning labels for ingredients. They are also advocating for the removal of charged lemonade from Panera’s menu, with reports indicating that the product is being phased out.
Jill Katz emphasised the importance of regulating energy drinks, stating, “Bring transparency to consumers, the public, so people have choices. People can make an educated choice on what’s right for them.”
Panera has denied any liability for Sarah Katz’s demise.
Following the filing of the Katzes’ lawsuit in 2023, Panera released a statement expressing their condolences and commitment to investigating the matter thoroughly.
The trial for this case is scheduled to take place in September in Philadelphia, with the Katzes’ legal representative also representing three other families who are suing Panera over their charged lemonade.
