MASONVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — Tragedy struck a family from Georgia who were visiting Cooperstown, New York, for a baseball tournament, as they lost their lives in a plane crash in a rural, wooded area. The incident took place on Sunday, when a single-engine Piper PA-46 crashed after taking off from a regional airport in Oneonta, according to the Federal Aviation Administration.

The wreckage of the plane and the remains of the five individuals on board were discovered in the town of Masonville, as authorities used drones, all-terrain vehicles, and helicopters to search for the remote crash site. The victims were identified as Roger Beggs, 76; Laura Van Epps, 42; Ryan Van Epps, 42; James Van Epps, 12; and Harrison Van Epps, 10.

The family was on their way back to Georgia after watching the 12-year-old boy’s baseball team compete in a tournament in Cooperstown, known for being the home of the Baseball Hall of Fame. Jim Van Epps, a family member, expressed his devastation at the loss of his son, daughter-in-law, and two grandchildren, describing it as a “massive tragedy.”

Jim Van Epps shared that his grandsons, who resided in the Atlanta suburb of Milton, excelled in academics and sports, with 10-year-old Harrison showing promise as a lacrosse player. He highlighted the unwavering support Ryan and Laura provided their sons in pursuing their interests.

Records indicate that Beggs held a pilot’s license, and Laura Van Epps’ father had volunteered to fly the family to upstate New York to attend the tournament. The ill-fated flight was en route to Cobb County International Airport in Atlanta, with a planned stop in West Virginia before the crash occurred.

Georgia Governor Brian Kemp took to social media to express his condolences, stating that he and his family were keeping the victims’ families in their thoughts and prayers. The FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board are conducting investigations into the tragic incident.
