Accident – Death – Obituary News : Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) – A 74-year-old Rochester man was sentenced today in Olmsted County Court for repeatedly sexually assaulting a young child.

Robert Charles Baker recently entered a guilty plea to a first-degree criminal sexual conduct charge. Under the terms of the plea deal, Olmsted County prosecutors agreed to drop their request for an aggravated sentence in the case.

The criminal complaint against Baker alleged that he sexually assaulted a six-year-old girl multiple times between January and August 2022. According to the court document filed in February of last year, Baker became the target of an investigation after Rochester police were contacted by a Mayo Clinic physician who reported that a young female patient “had potentially been sexually assaulted.”

The evidence listed against Baker included the victim identifying him as the person who had raped her. Investigators also stated that the young victim “possessed and inappropriately comprehensive knowledge of human sexuality” while describing the sexual abuse she experienced.

The charges also listed audio and video recordings from a security system in Baker’s home as evidence. The criminal complaint says the recordings captured conversations between the young victim and Baker during which he discussed his plans to sexually assault the child.

Baker was sentenced today to 12 years in prison, which matched the recommendation of the plea agreement. The sentencing order also says he will be subject to conditional release for 10 years after his release from prison.

In a recent ranking of the safest cities in Minnesota, Rochester did not make the list of the top 20 safest cities for 2024. This ranking was based on the latest FBI crime data available and compiled by Safewise. While Rochester did not make the list, it is important to note that safety is a top priority in the community.

Overall, the sentencing of Robert Charles Baker serves as a reminder of the importance of protecting vulnerable members of society and holding perpetrators of sexual assault accountable for their actions. The plea deal and subsequent sentencing highlight the cooperation between law enforcement, prosecutors, and the judicial system in seeking justice for victims of such heinous crimes..
