Tragedy struck in Tuscaloosa on June 29 as one man lost his life and another was injured in a shooting incident. The Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury is now tasked with determining whether the fatal shot was fired in self-defense.

At around 3:15 a.m., the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office received a distressing 911 call reporting a shooting at the 2000 block of Stardust Drive. Upon arrival, deputies discovered two adult men who had sustained gunshot wounds.

The 23-year-old victim, hailing from Tuscaloosa, was shot but fortunately, his injuries were deemed non-life-threatening. He was swiftly transported to DCH Regional Medical Center for medical attention.

Tragically, the second man, identified as 51-year-old Reggie Coverson of Tuscaloosa, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. A 36-year-old man present at the scene claimed he acted in self-defense by shooting Coverson and was subsequently taken to the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit for questioning. Numerous witnesses corroborated the self-defense narrative, suggesting Coverson was the aggressor in the altercation.

Evidence collected at the scene points to Coverson instigating the altercation with the 23-year-old victim before being shot by the 36-year-old man. The injured victim is currently in stable condition, recovering from the traumatic incident.

According to investigators, the shooting incident stemmed from a heated argument between the involved parties, escalating into a tragic outcome.

As of now, no charges have been filed in connection with the shooting, and the case is set to be presented before the Tuscaloosa County Grand Jury for further deliberation.
