Family of 13-Year-Old Boy Killed by Police in Utica, New York, Demands Justice

The family of Nyah Mway, a 13-year-old boy who was fatally shot by police in Utica, New York, is demanding justice for their loss. The tragic incident occurred on Friday night when Mway and a friend were stopped by officers investigating a robbery pattern. The police chief of Utica, Mark Williams, alleged that Mway had a realistic-looking replica gun in his hand when he was shot.

Mway’s uncle, Lay Htoo, expressed the devastation that the family is facing, especially after escaping civil unrest in Myanmar and spending time in a refugee camp in Thailand before moving to America. Htoo questioned the use of lethal force by the police, suggesting that a stun gun could have been used instead. The family is heartbroken over the loss of their child, who had recently graduated from the eighth grade.

According to Williams, the police officers involved in the shooting had reason to fear for their safety based on the body camera video footage. The officers, identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti, were investigating recent robberies involving suspects matching Mway’s description. Despite efforts to be transparent about the incident, the community’s trust in the police department has been damaged.

The shooting has sparked outrage in the community, with a vigil held in memory of Mway where attendees chanted “No justice, no peace.” The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation is conducting an independent investigation into the incident to ensure accountability and transparency.

Williams emphasised the importance of a thorough investigation and the need to consider all the information available before drawing conclusions. He acknowledged the impact of the shooting on the Karen ethnic minority community in Utica and expressed his commitment to restoring trust through transparency and accountability.

As the investigation continues, the family of Nyah Mway and the community in Utica are seeking answers and justice for the tragic loss of a young life.
