Two additional individuals who tragically lost their lives in a car accident following a police pursuit in Upland have been identified. The San Bernardino County Coroner’s Office confirmed that Michael Adrian Gomez, aged 17 from Pomona, and Joel Jeremiah Silva, aged 16 from Fontana, were among the four individuals who died in the incident on June 28.
The fatal collision occurred when the vehicle carrying the victims collided with another car before striking a pole at the intersection of 16th Street and Mountain Avenue. Jesus Guillen Jr., a 16-year-old from Fontana, was previously identified as one of the deceased. The identity of the fourth victim has not been disclosed to the public. Fortunately, a 13-year-old boy who was also in the vehicle survived the crash.
The incident began at approximately 1:50 a.m. when San Bernardino County Sheriff’s deputies attempted to pull over the vehicle near Foothill Boulevard and Archibald Avenue in Rancho Cucamonga, suspecting that the driver was under the influence. The driver of the vehicle refused to stop, leading deputies on a high-speed chase that lasted for six minutes before colliding with a Mustang.
The occupants of the Mustang, a 35-year-old man and a 21-year-old woman from Ontario, were taken to the hospital as a precautionary measure. The ongoing investigation has not revealed whether deputies discontinued the pursuit at any point or the speed at which the vehicle was travelling. Typically, officers involved in pursuits communicate the speed of the suspect vehicle, with all interactions being recorded for later analysis.
The Upland Police Department, responsible for investigating the collision aspect of the incident, was unavailable for comment at the time of reporting.
