Manuel Malinao : “General Santos Publisher Murdered – Tragic News”

A tragic incident unfolded in Barangay West, General Santos City, as a former publisher of a local newspaper was gunned down in front of his residence. The victim, identified as 74-year-old Manuel Malinao, also had a history of employment with the city government.

Witnesses to the crime reported that two masked assailants approached the victim while he was outside his house. Without warning, the gunmen opened fire, striking the victim multiple times. Despite efforts to provide medical assistance, Malinao succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Law enforcement officials recovered five spent shells from a 9mm pistol at the crime scene, indicating the use of a firearm in the attack. Investigations into the motive behind the killing have pointed towards a possible land dispute in which the victim was involved.

Land Dispute Suspected as Motive

Barangay West Chairman, Aying Acharon, revealed that complaints had been lodged against Malinao, with allegations of encroachment on a neighbour’s property. Acharon suggested that the victim’s contentious nature and involvement in land conflicts may have led to animosities with others.

Police Station 1 Commander, Major Renato Dungca Jr., highlighted the victim’s role in mediating land disputes for clients, potentially creating adversaries among those who opposed his interventions. The authorities have identified persons of interest in connection with the murder, focusing on individuals linked to the victim’s contentious land dealings.

Despite the unfolding details of the case, the victim’s family has chosen to remain silent on the matter, declining to issue a statement regarding the tragic loss of Manuel Malinao.
