Kaur, who was an aspiring chef, was on her way to visit her family for the first time in four years. The Herald Sun reported that tuberculosis, an infectious disease affecting the lungs, was likely the cause of her untimely death. Qantas expressed condolences to Kaur’s family and friends, stating that she required medical attention shortly after boarding the flight.
On 1 July, Qantas was made aware through media reports that Kaur may have had tuberculosis. The airline then contacted Australia’s National Incident Centre Operations for more information. It was revealed that the health issue had not been disclosed to Qantas prior to the incident.
Subsequently, the Department of Health in Victoria initiated limited contact tracing to identify individuals at risk. However, other passengers on the aircraft were not deemed necessary for contact tracing procedures.
