According to Lindsay Turner, an education and outreach nurse at CoxHealth Trauma Services in Springfield, Mo., one of the first steps to ensure a safe barbecue experience is to thoroughly clean your grill. A dirty grill can lead to grease fires and other hazards, so taking the time to clean it before use is essential.

In addition to cleaning your grill, it’s important to position it at least three feet away from any structures, such as houses, sheds, cars, or campers. This distance helps reduce the risk of accidental fires spreading to nearby buildings or vehicles.

When hosting a barbecue, it’s crucial to keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill at all times. Turner suggests using colourful duct tape to create a visual perimeter around the grill to help kids and pets understand where they should not cross.

Furthermore, having a fire extinguisher nearby is essential in case of emergencies. Pouring water on a grill fire is not recommended, as it can cause flare-ups and spread the flames. It’s also advised to never leave the grill unattended, as having someone monitoring it can help prevent accidents.

Aside from grill safety, other cooking hazards can arise during barbecue season. If using crockpots or Instant Pots for dips or soups, make sure to keep them pushed back and their cords picked up to prevent accidents.

When handling knives, ensure they are sharp to reduce the risk of cutting yourself with a dull blade. Additionally, avoid leaving knives in soapy water where they can easily be grabbed accidentally.

If an injury occurs during a cookout, it’s important to assess the severity of the injury. For minor burns, running cool water over the affected area is recommended, but avoid using ice. Seek medical attention if the burn blisters, causes extreme pain, or covers a large area of the body.

Turner emphasizes the importance of staying vigilant and not getting complacent when it comes to safety. By following these tips and taking necessary precautions, you can enjoy a safe and enjoyable summer barbecue without any accidents.
