MARION, Ohio (WBNS) – In a poignant tribute to his late father, Landon Winfield has followed in his footsteps by joining the Marion County Sheriff’s Office nearly two decades after his father, Deputy Brandy Winfield, was tragically killed while on duty in 2004.
Landon Winfield, who was just 3 years old at the time of his father’s death, was sworn in as the newest member of the sheriff’s office on Monday. Deputy Brandy Winfield was fatally shot while assisting a stranded motorist, leaving behind a grieving widow, Sarah Winfield, and two young sons.
The convicted killer is currently serving a 40-year to life sentence for the murder of Deputy Brandy Winfield, whose funeral drew law enforcement officers from across the state to pay their respects.
Now, Landon Winfield is determined to honour his father’s legacy by serving his community as a law enforcement officer. “I kind of took that as my calling. I want to carry my family’s name, which I’m doing right now, and it’s one of the proudest moments of my life. I think he would be pretty dang proud of me for choosing Marion County to start out,” Landon Winfield expressed.
Reflecting on the challenges she faced as a young widow, Sarah Winfield, Landon’s mother, shared her pride and support for her son’s decision to pursue a career in law enforcement. “He doesn’t want to do anything else, and what do I say to a kid that’s his dream?” Sarah Winfield remarked.
Seeing her son don the sheriff’s office uniform brought a flood of emotions for Sarah Winfield. “When he walked into the room, I had to stop. He looked just like his dad – spitting image,” she shared. “I don’t think there is any better place for Landon to be than with the people who loved his dad and will look out for him.”
Excited about his future in law enforcement, Landon Winfield is focused on upholding his family’s name and honouring his father’s memory. “More importantly, it’s what he did outside the profession that really weighs heavy on me. He was an amazing human being. If you ask people, they will say the same thing,” he reflected.
