PORTER TWP., Pa. (EYT) — Authorities have taken a man into custody on charges of sexually assaulting a young child in Porter Township, Jefferson County, Pennsylvania.
Joshua Xavier Barden, a 33-year-old resident of Vandergrift, has been arrested and charged by Punxsutawney-based State Police. The charges were filed in District Judge Jacqueline J. Mizerock’s office on Monday, July 1.
According to court documents, the alleged incidents took place approximately two to three years ago, with multiple occurrences reported between 2021 and 2022. The victim, who is currently nine years old, would have been around six to seven years old at the time of the alleged assaults. Barden, the accused, would have been in his late twenties to early thirties during this period.
The investigation was initiated on March 18 when the victim disclosed that she had been sexually abused by Barden on several occasions at a residence in Porter Township. Subsequent to a forensic interview on April 4, the victim detailed how Barden had touched her inappropriately using his hands/fingers and mouth, instructing her to keep the abuse a secret.

Further evidence came to light on April 12, when investigators discovered that Barden had spoken to a female acquaintance about the allegations. In the conversation, Barden expressed distress over receiving a letter from Child and Youth Services (CYS) containing the victim’s name. He confessed to the acquaintance that he feared facing a lengthy prison sentence for his actions and attempted to justify the abuse as a misunderstanding, claiming that the victim had requested it.
On July 1, Barden was formally charged with multiple offences, including:
- Rape of a Child, a Felony 1 (four counts)
- Indecent Assault on a Person Under 16, a Felony 1 (four counts)
- Sexual Assault, a Felony 2 (four counts)
- Involuntary Deviate Sexual Intercourse with a Child, a Felony (four counts)
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 10:00 a.m. on July 3 before Judge Mizerock.
