The coroner’s office in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, has recently confirmed the identity of a John Doe in a cold case that dates back to 1998. The body was discovered in the Susquehanna River by a fisherman in April of that year.
Discovery of the Body
On April 18, 1998, a fisherman found the body of an adult male in the Turkey Point area of the Susquehanna River in Manor Township, Lancaster County. The man was unclothed, and extensive postmortem changes had made his appearance unrecognizable.

Autopsy Results
An autopsy conducted on April 20, 1998, revealed no signs of trauma on the body. The cause of death was determined to be drowning, although the manner of death remained unknown at that time.
Efforts to Identify the Deceased
Despite efforts to identify the man, including dental exams and facial reconstructions, no leads were generated for over a decade. In 2017, the case was reopened with the assistance of multiple agencies, including the FBI, to create a new facial reconstruction of the unidentified male.
Breakthrough in 2023
In September 2023, the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office collaborated with the DNA Doe Project, a nonprofit organization focusing on forensic genealogy. Genetic testing revealed a potential match to a missing person from Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, reported in 1998.
Confirmation of Identity
In January 2024, genetic results confirmed that the unidentified man was James Gibson, a 39-year-old individual reported missing in February 1998. Dental comparisons and genetic profiles supported this identification.
Closure for the Family
James Gibson’s family finally has closure as the Lancaster County Coroner’s Office officially confirmed his identity. His cause of death, determined to be freshwater drowning, sheds light on the tragic circumstances surrounding his disappearance.
Continued Investigation
While the identity of the John Doe has been resolved, the manner of death remains undetermined. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of continued efforts in resolving cold cases and providing closure to families.
