Dave Bentlin : “Gender Identity Now Protected: No Discrimination Allowed!”

NORMAL (25News Now) – In a progressive move, Normal’s Town Council has unanimously agreed to update its Human Relations Code to include gender identity as a protected class. This update will provide protection from discrimination in areas such as employment, housing, financing, and public accommodations.

Gender identity is defined by the Town as “the actual or perceived appearance, expression, identity, or behavior of gender(s), regardless of whether it aligns with the person’s designated sex at birth.” This addition aims to ensure equal rights and opportunities for individuals of all gender identities.

Alongside the inclusion of gender identity, the council has also updated the definitions of sexual orientation and race. Sexual orientation is now described as “an individual’s actual or perceived romantic, physical, or sexual attraction to others, or lack thereof, based on gender.” The updated code acknowledges a spectrum of sexual orientations, including heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, asexuality, and pansexuality.

Furthermore, the code now recognises race as encompassing “traits associated with race, such as hair texture and protective hairstyles like braids, locks, and twists.” These updates reflect the Town’s commitment to fostering inclusivity and diversity within its community.

Dave Bentlin, President of the Prairie Pride Coalition, commended Normal for its forward-thinking approach in including sexual orientation as a protected class in the early 2000s. He emphasized the importance of modernizing the code, especially amidst national efforts to roll back protections, particularly in the realm of gender-affirming healthcare.

Karla Bailey-Smith, President of the American Civil Liberties Union Steering Committee of Central Illinois, highlighted the significance of updating the code in signalling support for families and individuals within the community. She expressed that the amendments will demonstrate the Town’s commitment to welcoming and supporting all residents and newcomers.

At the council meeting where the update was approved, no opposition was voiced. Individuals who feel discriminated against can lodge a complaint with the Town, which will be reviewed by the Human Relations Commission. If the matter remains unresolved, it may proceed to a public hearing.

The absence of set fees or fines for discrimination underscores the Town’s emphasis on fostering a fair and inclusive environment for all its residents.
