Dallas Police Fatally Shoot Knife-Wielding Man in Disturbance Call

In a tragic incident on June 28, 2024, Dallas police officers responded to a disturbance call at 5850 Beltline Road, where they fatally shot a man armed with a knife. The Dallas Police Department reported that the officers involved in the incident were Senior Corporal Brandon Massey, Officer Dakota Capparucci, and Sergeant Yancy Graves.

Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered a woman who had reported that a man, later identified as 34-year-old Cody Watkins, was harming her and had knives and a machete. The woman also stated that Watkins had threatened her and a dog at the location. The suspect and victim were found in an encampment in the woods behind an apartment complex.

Inside a tent, officers found Watkins holding a knife with the woman caller. Despite repeated commands to drop the weapon, Watkins refused to comply. At one point, he even threw a knife at the officers while still holding another one. In an attempt to de-escalate the situation, officers used pepper spray and less-lethal measures, but Watkins continued to advance towards them with the knife.

Senior Corporal Massey and Officer Capparucci made the difficult decision to fire their weapons, striking Watkins. Sergeant Graves did not discharge his firearm during the incident. Following the shooting, officers provided immediate first aid to Watkins and called for Dallas Fire and Rescue. Watkins was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries. The woman inside the tent was also taken to a hospital for minor injuries.

The Dallas Police Special Investigations Unit is currently conducting an investigation into the incident. The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office and the Office of Community Police Oversight have been notified and are involved in the case. To ensure transparency, the Dallas Police Department has released the body-worn camera footage of the incident, which can be viewed here.

Chief Garcia will address the media in a press conference on Monday to provide further details on the incident. The case will be documented under the reference number 099549-2024.
