A devastating fire broke out last evening in Bush Lot, West Coast Berbice, resulting in the loss of two buildings and significant damage to a third. The incident, which claimed the life of a man, has left the community in shock and mourning.

Victim Identified as Carl Persaud

The victim of the fire has been identified as Carl Persaud, a resident of Lot 16 ‘B’ Bush Lot Public Road, WCB. He was the owner of a two-storey wooden and concrete building, with the upper flat serving as his residence and the lower flat housing the Nalico & Nafico Insurance Office.

The neighbouring property at Lot 15 ‘B’ Bush Lot Public Road, WCB, owned by Ruth Persaud, suffered a similar fate. The wooden and concrete building on this lot was completely destroyed, with the upper flat left vacant and the lower flat housing businesses such as Medical Aid Pharmacy, owned by Rochelle Cheefoon, and Ramesh’s Jewelry, owned by Ramesh Persaud.

Property Damage Extends to Nearby Businesses

Another property owner, Sundnrada Jagmohan, also faced the brunt of the fire at Lot 17 ‘B’ Bush Lot Public Road, WCB. His two-storey concrete building, which housed two businesses on the lower flat, was partly burnt in the incident.

Reports indicate that the fire started at approximately 17:40 hours, with witnesses observing Carl Persaud attempting to seek help by pushing his hand through a bedroom window. Unfortunately, the flames engulfed the upper flat before assistance could reach him, leading to the rapid spread of the fire to adjacent buildings and businesses.

The loss of life and property in this tragic fire has deeply impacted the residents of Bush Lot and the wider West Coast Berbice community. Investigations are ongoing to determine the cause of the blaze and prevent similar incidents in the future.
