Residents of Crete, Nebraska, are reeling after a tragic incident involving a shooting that left seven people injured. The suspect, identified as 74-year-old Billy Booth, allegedly opened fire on his neighbours in what authorities suspect may have been a racially motivated attack.
The incident occurred on Friday evening, prompting multiple 911 calls to the authorities. Booth reportedly used a shotgun to shoot at a group of people in the yard of a neighbouring home, resulting in injuries to three adults and four children, ranging from 3 years old to 43. Fortunately, all the victims are expected to recover from their injuries.
Community Response
The League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) is providing support to the affected family, who have been described as having lived in Crete for the past decade after relocating from Guatemala. A representative from LULAC expressed the traumatic impact of the incident on the family and the community at large.
Authorities have indicated that Booth and the family did not have any immediate interaction prior to the shooting. However, there had been previous incidents involving Booth yelling at the family to “go home” and “speak English.” The Nebraska State Patrol is currently investigating the possibility of the shooting being racially motivated.

Community Unity
Despite the shocking events, Crete Mayor Dave Bauer emphasised that the actions of one individual do not reflect the values of the community as a whole. He reassured residents that Crete remains a welcoming and inclusive place, where positive changes continue to shape the town’s identity.
Neighbours of Booth expressed disbelief at the tragic turn of events, noting that while Booth had exhibited occasional outbursts in the past, nothing had prepared them for the violence that unfolded. Sawyer Hanson, the grandson of one of Booth’s neighbours, described Booth as alternating between moments of normality and fits of anger.
“Sometimes, he was just a normal person and nothing really you would even think of,” said Hanson. “And then other times, he was kind of just yelling about anything or everything. No one really did anything to him to ever get any of that anger out of him.”
As the community grapples with the aftermath of this senseless act, there is a collective resolve to overcome the trauma and move forward together. The resilience and unity of Crete are evident in the outpouring of support for the victims and their families, as well as in the determination to uphold the values of peace and harmony in the face of adversity.
