Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The peaceful community of Crete in Nebraska was left reeling after a harrowing incident that unfolded on Friday afternoon. Police received several frantic 911 calls reporting a shooting in the area, which turned out to be a tragic event involving 74-year-old Billy Booth.

According to reports from KOLN, Booth allegedly opened fire with a shotgun from his residence, injuring seven individuals who were gathered in the yard of a neighbouring home. The victims, comprising three adults and four children aged between 3 and 43, sustained injuries but are expected to recover.

Tragically, the perpetrator, Booth, was later discovered dead in his home from what is believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The incident has sent shockwaves through the tight-knit community, leaving residents grappling with the aftermath of this senseless act of violence.

Community Response

In the wake of the shooting, the League of United Latin American Citizens has stepped in to support the affected family, who have been left traumatised by the events of the past few days. Originally from Guatemala, the family has called Crete their home for the past decade.

While the Nebraska State Patrol has indicated that there was no immediate interaction between Booth and the family prior to the shooting, Crete’s police chief revealed that there had been previous encounters between them. Reports had been made of Booth directing hostile remarks at the family, urging them to “go home” and “speak English.”

Although investigations are ongoing, authorities have not ruled out the possibility that the shooting was racially motivated. The grandson of one of Booth’s neighbours expressed shock at the incident, highlighting that while there had been past issues with Booth, nothing of this magnitude had occurred before.

Community Solidarity

Mayor Dave Bauer of Crete emphasised that the shooting, while tragic, does not define the community as a whole. He reassured residents that Crete remains a strong and resilient community, capable of overcoming challenges and moving forward together.

“Crete is the same old, good old Crete that it’s always been,” Bauer affirmed. “We have experienced changes over the years, but they have been positive changes. As a community, we will come together to support one another and put this incident behind us.”
