The tranquil town of Crete, Nebraska, was rocked by tragedy when 74-year-old resident Billy Booth unleashed a barrage of gunfire that left seven individuals wounded. The incident, which occurred around 4:30 p.m. on Friday, has left the tight-knit community reeling and searching for answers.
Local authorities were inundated with frantic 911 calls reporting the shooting, which was believed to be racially motivated. Booth, armed with a shotgun, reportedly fired shots from his residence, striking seven victims in the yard of a neighbouring home. Tragically, Booth was later discovered dead in his home, the victim of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Among the injured were three adults and four children, ranging in age from 3 to 43 years old. Fortunately, all are expected to make a full recovery, although the emotional scars from the ordeal may linger for some time.
The affected family, originally from Guatemala, has been left traumatised by the events of the past few days. League of United Latin American Citizens representatives have stepped in to provide support and assistance during this difficult period.

While the Nebraska State Patrol revealed that there was no immediate interaction between Booth and the victims prior to the shooting, Crete’s police chief disclosed that there was a history of tension between Booth and the family. Reports had been filed indicating Booth’s discriminatory behaviour towards the family, including demands for them to “go home” and “speak English.”
Although investigations are ongoing, authorities have not discounted the possibility that the shooting was racially motivated. The grandson of one of Booth’s neighbours expressed shock at the incident, noting that while Booth had displayed erratic behaviour in the past, nothing of this magnitude had ever occurred.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, Crete Mayor Dave Bauer emphasised that the shooting does not reflect the values of the community as a whole. He reassured residents that Crete remains a welcoming and inclusive town, despite the harrowing events that transpired.
