In a heartbreaking turn of events, five children have tragically lost their lives and 29 others have fallen seriously ill at Yogpurush Dham Ashram, an orphanage in the city of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. The district collector has swiftly ordered an investigation to determine the cause of these devastating deaths.

Anita Sharma, the principal of Yogpurush Dham ashram, revealed that one child succumbed to epilepsy on Sunday, followed by another seven-year-old child also suffering from epilepsy passing away on Monday. The following day saw the tragic deaths of a 10-year-old boy, a 7-year-old, and a 15-year-old, believed to be caused by a mysterious infection.

The deceased children, identified as Shubham alias Karan, Divya, Akash, Shubh, and Chhota Govind, had been brought to the ashram by the Child Welfare Committee from various districts. Meanwhile, 29 other children have been rushed to Chacha Nehru Hospital in Indore after experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, and diarrhoea on Monday and Tuesday.

Dr Ashok Yadav, the hospital superintendent, stated that two of the children are in critical condition, suffering from dehydration and acute weakness, while the rest are currently stable and receiving treatment. Comprehensive tests have been conducted to determine the exact cause of their illness.

In response to the tragic events, Indore district collector Ashish Singh has initiated a thorough investigation. Sub-divisional magistrate Om Narayan Singh has been relieved of his duties after a video surfaced on social media showing him laughing loudly during an inspection of the orphanage.

The collector disclosed, “The children exhibited symptoms of diarrhoea and dehydration, indicating a potential blood infection as the cause of death. However, further investigations are required to ascertain the exact reason. Blood samples have been sent for testing, and samples of food and water provided to the children have been collected by the food and drugs department for analysis.”

Authorities have also launched a police inquiry, as the orphanage houses mentally challenged children from different parts of the state. Following the tragic incidents, the ashram management has written to the Child Welfare Committee, attributing the illnesses to an undiagnosed blood infection.

Established in 2006 under the guidance of Swami Parmanand Giri, Yogpurush Dham Ashram currently accommodates 204 children. The community is deeply saddened by this devastating loss, and efforts are underway to uncover the truth behind this tragic situation..
