Last week, officers, along with support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council, started contacting families affected by the discovery of 35 bodies and suspected human ashes at the funeral home’s site on Hessle Road earlier this year.

The investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors has left hundreds of families in Hull and East Yorkshire questioning the ashes of their loved ones. Some families have been informed that they have the wrong remains, adding to the distress of those already grappling with loss. A 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of various charges, including prevention of a lawful burial and fraud, and are currently on bail.
Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin of Humberside Police stated, “Over the last two weeks, my officers have been reaching out to the families identified as part of the investigation. We are providing updates on the recovered ashes and arranging personal meetings to offer support and discuss available options.” He emphasized the importance of prioritizing the families’ well-being and privacy before making any public announcements.
The personal meetings, which began last week and will continue for some time, involve both police officers and support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council. The aim is to offer care and assistance to families affected by the investigation. Each family will have different preferences regarding the ashes, and the authorities are committed to supporting them through this challenging period.

Unfortunately, DNA profiles could not be used to identify the human ashes, leading to further distress among affected families. Police have been in contact with more than 700 families to share the latest scientific advice and offer ongoing support.
Since the April update, comprehensive inquiries have been conducted to locate next of kin based on documentation found with individual ashes and at the funeral home.
