Accident – Death – Obituary News : Humberside Police have commenced visits to families in Hull and East Yorkshire in connection with the ongoing investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Collaborating with support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council, the police are delving into the discovery of 35 bodies and suspected human ashes at the funeral home’s location on Hessle Road earlier this year.

The investigation has left hundreds of families in the region questioning the remains of their loved ones, with some confirming they possess the incorrect ashes. A 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of various charges related to the case and are currently on bail.
Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin of Humberside Police revealed that officers have been in direct contact with the affected families to provide updates on the recovered ashes and offer support. Personal meetings have been arranged to discuss the situation in detail and present available options to the families.
McLoughlin emphasized the importance of providing updates privately to the families before making a public announcement. He stated, “The families are our priority, and the information is personal and private to them.” The meetings are ongoing, with support staff from both councils present to offer assistance and care to the families during this challenging time.
The Assistant Chief Constable highlighted that some families may choose to receive the ashes, while others may opt not to. He stressed that there is no right or wrong decision in this matter and acknowledged the varying impacts it may have on different families. Humberside Police is committed to supporting the families through this difficult period.

Since the last update in April, comprehensive inquiries have been conducted to identify and locate next of kin based on documentation found with the ashes and at the funeral home.
