Accident – Death – Obituary News : Humberside Police have initiated visits to families in Hull and East Yorkshire in connection with the ongoing investigation into the discovery of remains at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Accompanied by support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council, the police have been reaching out to families affected by the shocking discovery made earlier this year at the Hessle Road location.

The investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors was launched after authorities uncovered 35 bodies and suspected human ashes at the funeral home. Since then, families in the region have been left grappling with uncertainty and questions about the remains of their loved ones. Some have even been informed that they may have been given the wrong ashes.
Two individuals, a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman, were arrested on suspicion of various charges including prevention of a lawful burial and fraud. Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin stated, “Over the last two weeks, my officers have been making contact with the families identified as part of the investigation. This has been to provide an update as to the ashes recovered and to also arrange personal meetings with them, to offer further support and discuss in detail the process that has taken place and the options available to them.”
The meetings with families commenced last week and are expected to continue as the authorities strive to address the concerns and provide assistance to those impacted by the incident. Mr McLoughlin emphasized the importance of offering care and support to families during this challenging period, acknowledging the individual nature of each family’s experience and the need for sensitivity in handling the situation.

Following the initial announcement of the investigation, over 2,000 calls were received, with many expressing concerns about the identification of their loved ones’ ashes. Despite efforts to identify the remains using DNA profiles, Mr McLoughlin confirmed that it was not possible, delivering what he described as “devastating news for families and loved ones.”
