Following the discovery, a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were apprehended on suspicion of offences including prevention of a lawful and decent burial, fraud by false representation, and fraud by abuse of position.

Humberside police stated, “163 families have now been identified, and officers have been contacting them to provide an update and discuss the options available to them.”

Thom Mcloughlin, the assistant chief constable of the Humberside force leading the investigation, informed The Guardian, “Over the past fortnight, my team has been reaching out to the families associated with the investigation.

“This has been to update them on the recovered ashes and to arrange personal meetings with them for further support and detailed discussions on the process and available options.

“We held off on sharing this update publicly until initial contact was made, as the families are our primary concern and the information is personal and confidential to them.”
