Humberside Police have announced that they have started visiting families in Hull and East Yorkshire as part of the ongoing inquiry into the remains found at Legacy Independent Funeral Directors. Last week, officers, along with support staff from Hull City Council and East Riding Council, began reaching out to families affected by the discovery of 35 bodies and suspected human ashes at the firm’s site on Hessle Road earlier this year.

Following the announcement of the investigation into Legacy Independent Funeral Directors, many families in the region have been left with questions about the remains of their loved ones. Some have been informed that they may have the wrong ashes. As part of the investigation, a 46-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman were arrested on suspicion of various charges, including prevention of a lawful burial and fraud.

Assistant Chief Constable Thom McLoughlin stated, “Over the last two weeks, my officers have been reaching out to the families identified in the investigation. We are providing updates on the recovered ashes and arranging personal meetings to offer support and discuss available options.”

McLoughlin added, “We are committed to supporting families through this difficult time. Each family’s situation is unique, and we are here to provide care and assistance based on their individual needs.”

For families concerned about the investigation, support is available through Victim Support’s helpline at 0808 281 1136. Mr. McLoughlin expressed gratitude to the community for their cooperation and assured that updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

In light of recent developments, it has been confirmed that DNA testing has been unsuccessful in identifying the human ashes recovered. Despite this setback, officers are working diligently to provide support to over 700 families affected by the investigation. Comprehensive inquiries are ongoing to locate next of kin based on documentation found with the ashes.

Humberside Police continue to urge anyone impacted by the Legacy Independent Funeral Directors incident to seek assistance and stay informed as the investigation unfolds.
