In a devastating incident in Karachi, seven picnickers, including three children, lost their lives while 14 others sustained injuries after their coaster collided with a trailer in the Mauripur area on Sunday. According to Mauripur SHO Chaudhry Tufail, the victims, who were all relatives, were en route to Hawkesbay beach for a leisurely day out.
The fatal accident occurred near the truck stand when the trailer was attempting a U-turn, causing the coaster to lose control, crash into the heavy vehicle, hit a footpath, and ultimately overturn. The injured individuals were swiftly transported to the Shaheed Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto Trauma Centre, Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, and a private hospital for urgent medical attention.
DIG-South Syed Asad Raza confirmed the tragic toll, with seven fatalities and 14 individuals sustaining injuries in the collision. The deceased were identified as Sughra Ali, 40, Shazia Umer, 45, Kinza Umer, 10, Sakeena Manzoor, 6, Zeenat Hayat, 4, Qadeer Jabbar, 14, and an unidentified 40-year-old woman.
Residing in Bhingoria Goth in Azizabad, the victims hailed from the same neighbourhood. The trailer driver fled the scene, abandoning the vehicle, while the coaster driver was among those injured in the accident. Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed highlighted the critical condition of three female patients.
Authorities React to the Tragedy
Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed his dismay at the incident, urging the authorities at CHK and JPMC to provide the best possible medical care to the injured parties. He condemned the reckless driving that led to the loss of innocent lives and demanded a comprehensive report from the inspector general of police for necessary action against irresponsible drivers.
Concurrently, Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori conveyed his profound sorrow over the bus accident and requested detailed reports from the city commissioner and Karachi police chief. He emphasised the importance of ensuring top-notch medical treatment for the injured victims, underscoring the significance of road safety measures to prevent such tragedies from reoccurring.
