On July 1st, a tragic incident occurred in West Bengal’s Jhargram district, where a 23-year-old man lost his life after being brutally beaten by a group of individuals. This marks the third death in a series of mob attacks that have recently shaken the state. The previous incidents took place in Kolkata and Salt Lake on June 28th and 29th, respectively.

The victim, identified as Sourabh Sau, was discovered lying injured on a road in the Jamboni area near Jhargram town by local residents on June 22nd. He was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries a week later on Sunday.

The police have initiated an investigation into the matter and have registered a case against unidentified perpetrators based on a complaint filed by Sau’s family on June 27th. According to his family, Sau was attacked by a group of men hired by a contractor who accused him of attempting to steal parts from an earth mover parked on the roadside.

It was revealed that Sau was out on his two-wheeler for some errands and had stopped to rest under a tree on his way back when the altercation took place. The earth mover machine, which belonged to the contractor, was parked in the vicinity, leading to the unfortunate confrontation.

Tragically, this incident comes shortly after the deaths of Prasen Mondal in Salt Lake and Irshad Alam in Kolkata’s Bowbazar area, both of whom fell victim to mob violence. The escalating trend of mob attacks has raised concerns among officials and citizens alike.

Government Response and Public Outcry

Firhad Hakim, the Municipal Affairs and Urban Development Minister, has called for mass counselling to counter the rising mass hysteria that has been observed in recent incidents. He emphasised the importance of addressing the root causes of such violent behaviours within society.

On the other hand, Sukanta Majumdar, the state BJP president and Union minister, has criticised the Trinamool Congress (TMC) government for its alleged failure to curb these heinous crimes. The growing instances of mob violence have sparked outrage and demands for stricter measures to ensure public safety.

As the investigation into Sourabh Sau’s tragic death continues, authorities and community leaders are working towards promoting peace and harmony within the region to prevent further acts of violence and injustice.
