A trial date has been set for Shawn Cranston, a 52-year-old man from Corrie, who is accused of the murder of a pregnant Amish woman earlier this year. The trial is scheduled to take place over the course of approximately one week in mid-November, according to a pre-trial order issued last week by Crawford County Court of Common Pleas Judge Francis Schultz.

The proceedings against Cranston are set to commence with jury selection on November 12, as outlined in the court order. The trial is expected to begin immediately following the selection of the jury and is anticipated to last between five to seven days.

The trial will adhere to the court’s standard operating hours from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with a provision in the order stating that both the prosecution and defence should be prepared to continue proceedings past the usual closing time if required.

Charges Against Cranston

Shawn Cranston faces several charges, including criminal homicide, criminal homicide of an unborn child, burglary with bodily injury, and criminal trespass in connection with the deaths of Rebekah Byler, 23, and her unborn child on February 26.

According to Pennsylvania State Police, Cranston is alleged to have murdered Byler and her unborn daughter by shooting Byler in the head and/or slashing her throat. Byler’s body was discovered in the living room of her home by her husband and a family friend after they returned home on the afternoon of February 26. Fortunately, the couple’s two young children were unharmed.

Arrest and Detainment

Shawn Cranston was apprehended on the evening of March 1 outside a store in Corrie. Following an extensive five-day investigation, he was identified as the prime suspect in the double murder, leading to his arrest by state police. Since his initial arraignment on March 2, Cranston has been held without bond in the Crawford County jail in Saegertown awaiting trial, as homicide is considered a non-bondable offence in Pennsylvania.

Legal Proceedings

Judge Schultz’s order mandates that both the prosecution and defence teams must submit their respective jury interview questions by October 31 and their requested jury instructions by November 8. Furthermore, the order stipulates that the trial must proceed without any delays unless under extraordinary circumstances.
