In a heartbreaking turn of events, a family outing near Bhushi Dam in Lonavala, Pune, ended in tragedy as five individuals, including two minors, drowned in the waters on Sunday. The victims have been identified as Shahista Ansari (36), Amima Ansari (13), and Umera Ansari (8), whose bodies have been recovered, while 4-year-old Adnan Ansari and 9-year-old Mariya Sayyad are still missing.
The incident took place around 12:30 pm at the backside of Bhushi Dam, a popular tourist spot known for its scenic waterfalls. The family, residents of Sayyad Nagar in Pune City, was enjoying a day out when the unfortunate incident occurred, leading to the loss of five lives.
Search and Rescue Efforts Underway
Authorities, including Lonavala Police and emergency services, are currently engaged in search and rescue operations to locate the missing children. The Indian Navy has also deployed divers to assist in the operations as efforts continue to find Adnan and Mariya.
Superintendent of Pune Rural Police, Pankaj Deshmukh, stated, “A woman and four children drowned in a waterfall near Bhushi Dam in Lonavala. Three bodies have been recovered, while two individuals are still missing. All five victims belong to the same family.”

On Monday morning, the search and rescue operations entered their second day as authorities intensified their efforts to locate the missing children. The tragic incident has left the community in shock, with many expressing their condolences to the affected family.
SP Deshmukh emphasised, “The family was enjoying a day out when tragedy struck, leading to the loss of five lives. The strong currents near the waterfall proved to be fatal as some members got too close and were swept away.”
