(KNOE) – As Americans gear up to celebrate Independence Day with traditional cookouts, studies have revealed that the cost of cooking out for the Fourth of July has reached an all-time high. The 2024 report from the American Farm Bureau Federation highlights that the average cost to feed a gathering of 10 people at this year’s Fourth of July cookout is estimated to be $71.22, marking a significant increase from last year’s $67.73.
Quincy Vidrine, a nutrition and community health agent at LSU AgCenter in Franklin Parish, emphasised the importance of being mindful of the rising prices of protein foods such as beef, pork, and chicken, which are popular choices for grilling during this festive season.
“When planning your Fourth of July menu, consider opting for lower-priced cuts of beef or pork. Bone-in chicken is also a more economical choice compared to boneless varieties,” explained Vidrine. “Cuts like top sirloin are great for kebabs and stir-fries, while spare ribs are a budget-friendly option over baby back ribs.”
The report also reveals that the cost of strawberries has increased compared to previous years, with two pints of strawberries now averaging at $4.61. Vidrine suggested that consumers explore alternative fruits that are in season, such as blueberries and blackberries, which can be used as substitutes in recipes that call for strawberries.

While it’s important to take advantage of store sales to save money, Vidrine cautioned against “sale chasing,” which involves travelling to multiple stores in search of deals. Instead, she recommended checking online ads and utilising store apps to access digital deals and discounts.
“By subscribing to store apps and browsing for digital deals, you can effectively budget for your Fourth of July cookout and ensure you have all the essentials for a successful celebration,” advised Vidrine.
