Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A devastating incident has occurred at St Margaret Mary’s Spotswood, a primary school in Melbourne’s west, resulting in the tragic death of a beloved teacher, Paul Hogan. The 61-year-old educator lost his life after falling through a skylight while attempting to retrieve balls from the school’s roof. The incident, which took place at around 2.30pm on Thursday, has left the community in mourning.

According to WorkSafe Victoria, Hogan fell over three meters to the concrete ground below, sustaining critical head injuries. Despite being rushed to the hospital, he sadly passed away on Friday, leaving behind a legacy of dedication and service to the education sector.

Dr Edward Simons, the executive director of Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools, expressed deep sadness over the loss of Hogan, describing him as a highly esteemed educator and leader with a remarkable 36-year career in the Catholic school system. Hogan’s journey in education began in 1988, and he went on to serve in various schools across Melbourne before assuming principal roles at Our Lady of Mount Carmel school, Sunbury, and St Mary’s in Ascot Vale.

Even after his retirement in 2022, Hogan continued to contribute as a part-time and casual relief teacher at St Anne’s Sunbury, St Mary’s Ascot Vale, and St Margaret Mary’s Spotswood. His dedication to nurturing young minds and supporting his colleagues has left a lasting impact on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Simons extended heartfelt condolences to Hogan’s family, friends, and colleagues, emphasizing the profound loss felt by the entire community. He remarked, “Paul was a friend and mentor to many in our MACS community, and he will be dearly missed.”

The tragic incident has prompted an investigation by WorkSafe, marking the 23rd confirmed workplace fatality for 2024. With 41 work-related deaths reported at the same time last year, the need for stringent safety measures in the workplace has been underscored.
