The findings include mummies believed to belong to families buried together, coffins, clay vessels known as amphorae decorated with vine-leaf designs, cartonnage made from recycled papyri or fabric, and various artifacts like offering tables. These tombs provide valuable insights into the customs and beliefs of the people who inhabited Aswan during that time.
Leading the excavation is Patrizia Piacentini, an Egyptologist and archaeologist from the University of Milan, who described the site as a “rich and important place.” The discovery of the burial site in 2015 followed illegal excavations in the area, prompting the government to enlist local archaeologists to survey the site. The tombs, dating from the late Greek and Roman periods, offer a glimpse into a significant period of history in Egypt.
The tombs on the hilltop were used for approximately 900 years, spanning from the sixth century BC to the second or third century AD. This period saw the rule of the Persian, Greek Ptolemaic dynasty, and Roman empires in Egypt. The elite were buried in the tombs on the hill, while middle-class individuals were interred in the lower levels.
A significant finding from the excavation is the discovery of mummies, with around 30% to 40% of them being children as young as 2 years old and newborns. Analysis revealed that infectious diseases like tuberculosis and anemia were common causes of death, even among the affluent. The team continues to conduct biological analyses to understand more about the health conditions of the time.

The discovery of these ancient Egyptian tombs has been described as exceptional and promising by Piacentini. The team plans to continue their mission to uncover the history of the diverse populations that once inhabited Aswan. With at least 300 tombs already mapped out in the necropolis area, covering about 215,000 square feet, there is potential for even more remarkable discoveries in the future..
