Nyah allegedly aimed an object at the officer, which was later determined to be a pellet gun.

The Officers Involved

The officers involved in the incident were identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti. Body camera footage shows the officers approaching Nyah and another youth before the tragic events unfolded. Patterson tackled Nyah to the ground after a short chase, with Husnay firing the fatal shot.

Who Was Nyah Mway?

Nyah was a 13-year-old boy who had recently graduated from 8th grade at Donovan Middle School. He was a member of the Karen ethnic minority and a refugee born in Myanmar. The fatal shooting has caused outrage in Utica’s Karen immigrant community, with calls for accountability and justice.

Hundreds attended a candlelight vigil to honour Nyah’s life and demand answers from law enforcement. The New York Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations has opened an investigation into the boy’s death, while Utica police are conducting an internal investigation to ensure policies and procedures were followed.
