More than 100 residents of Utica, N.Y., gathered at a church on Sunday afternoon to demand accountability for the killing of 13-year-old Nyah Mway by a police officer last week. The tragic incident has left the community in mourning and seeking answers.

Community Gathers for Justice

The residents, predominantly from Utica’s Karen community, came together to express their grief and frustration over Nyah’s death. Nyah’s family members, who are Karen refugees, were also present at the gathering.

Utica, a city with a significant refugee population, has been rocked by this unprecedented loss. Nyah’s killing marks the first time a Karen person in the United States has been killed by the police, highlighting the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement.

Moving Forward with Questions

During the meeting, Mayor Michael P. Galime faced tough questions from the community about the police officers’ actions leading to Nyah’s death. Residents sought clarity on the protocols followed by the officers and demanded justice for Nyah.

Mayor Galime assured the community that the New York Attorney General’s Office would investigate the incident to determine if the use of force was justified. While tensions ran high at times during the meeting, the community’s call for accountability remained at the forefront.

Calls for Justice and Healing

The officers involved in the shooting have been identified, with Officer Patrick Husnay being the one who fired the fatal shot. The other officers, Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, are also under investigation.

As the community continues to grapple with Nyah’s tragic death, there is a growing demand for justice and accountability. The Police Department’s internal investigation, coupled with the state-led inquiry, will hopefully shed light on the circumstances surrounding Nyah’s killing.

Remembering Nyah

Utica residents came together for a vigil near the site of the shooting to honour Nyah’s memory. Candles were lit, and balloons in the shape of the number 13, representing Nyah’s age, were released.

Nyah’s family, represented by Lay Htoo, a close relative, expressed their desire for justice. Nyah’s mother is seeking accountability and closure, hoping that the officer responsible for her son’s death will be held accountable.

As the community mourns the loss of a young life, the call for justice and transparency in policing grows louder. Utica residents are united in their quest for accountability and healing in the wake of this tragic incident.
