Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A shocking video released late Saturday has captured the moment a police officer in upstate New York fatally shot a 13-year-old boy who had been tackled to the ground after running from the police and pointing a replica handgun at them.

The tragic incident occurred a little after 10 pm on Friday in Utica, a city located about 400km northwest of Manhattan. The officers had stopped two 13-year-old youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation, as they matched the descriptions of the suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident.

The body camera footage released by the police shows one of the officers stating the need to pat down the youths to ensure they were not carrying any weapons. However, one of the youths, identified as Nyah Mway, ran away as soon as the officer made the statement.

In a chaotic turn of events, Nyah Mway was seen pointing what appeared to be a handgun at the pursuing officers as he ran. The officers, believing it to be a real firearm, quickly sprang into action. A ground struggle ensued, during which one of the officers fired a single shot that tragically struck the boy in the chest.

The police chief, Mark Williams, stated that immediate first aid was provided to Nyah Mway, who was then rushed to Wynn Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. It was later revealed that the weapon Nyah Mway was carrying was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen5 handgun, designed to fire only pellets or BBs.

The officer who fired the fatal shot was identified as Patrick Husnay, a six-year veteran of the police department. Following the incident, Husnay, along with Officers Bryce Patterson and Andrew Citriniti, were placed on administrative leave with pay.

The release of the body camera footage sparked outrage in the community, with bystanders capturing the chaotic scene on their phones. The incident has left Utica reeling, with the city’s population of 65,000 grappling with the aftermath of the tragic shooting.

Nyah Mway, a refugee from Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was described as an eighth grader at Donovan Middle School. The incident has raised questions about police procedure and training, with an internal investigation underway to determine if the officers followed protocols.

In a statement, Chief Williams extended his heartfelt condolences to Nyah Mway’s family and acknowledged the traumatic nature of the incident for all involved. The state attorney general’s office will also be launching an independent investigation to determine the justification of the shooting.

The harrowing video serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement officers in high-pressure situations. As the community mourns the loss of a young life, the quest for justice and accountability continues.
