Accident – Death – Obituary News : NEW YORK — Shocking video footage released late Saturday captured the tragic moment when a 13-year-old boy was fatally shot by a police officer in Utica, upstate New York. The incident occurred after the teen, identified as Nyah Mway, ran from the police and pointed a replica handgun at them.

The harrowing events unfolded a little after 10 p.m. on Friday when officers in the city, approximately 240 miles northwest of Manhattan, stopped two youths in connection with an armed robbery investigation. Both 13-year-olds matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and were in the same area at the time of the incident. One of the teens, Nyah Mway, was also walking in the road, a violation of state traffic laws.

The body camera footage released by the police shows the officers informing the youths that they need to conduct a pat-down to ensure they are not carrying any weapons. Upon hearing this, Nyah Mway immediately takes off running. The video freezes frames where he is seen pointing the replica handgun at the pursuing officers, prompting them to believe it was a real firearm. The officers involved in the incident have been identified as Patrick Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti.

In a tragic turn of events, during a struggle on the ground, Officer Husnay fired a single shot that struck Nyah Mway in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid from the officers and being rushed to Wynn Hospital, the teenager succumbed to his injuries. It was later determined that the weapon Nyah Mway was carrying was a replica of a Glock 17 Gen 5 handgun, designed to fire only pellets or BBs.

The release of the body camera footage has sparked outrage and controversy in Utica, prompting calls for transparency and accountability. The Utica Police Department has initiated an internal investigation to determine whether the officers followed proper protocols and training. Additionally, the state attorney general will be launching their investigation to ascertain the justification of the shooting.

A tense news conference held on Saturday was cut short as community members, including the family of the deceased youth, expressed their frustration and grief over the tragic incident. Utica Police Chief Mark Williams expressed his condolences to the family, acknowledging the traumatic nature of the event for all parties involved.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this heartbreaking incident, questions surrounding police protocols and the use of force continue to loom large. The release of the body camera footage has shed light on the chaotic and emotional nature of the encounter, serving as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by law enforcement in high-pressure situations..
