Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Relatives of a 13-year-old boy who tragically lost his life in a police shooting in central New York are demanding justice as members of their immigrant community from Myanmar aim to press local officials for accountability.

The state attorney general is currently conducting an investigation into the shooting of Nyah Mway, whom Utica police tackled to the ground and fatally shot after a foot chase on Friday.

Police, who are also conducting their own probe, released body camera footage showing a youth appearing to aim an object at them before they took action. The object turned out to be a BB gun that closely resembled a real firearm, according to police statements.

While the official investigations are ongoing, Nyah Mway’s family and community members are calling for accountability for the tragic death of the teen, who was born in Myanmar and belongs to the Karen ethnic minority.

Residents of Utica from the Karen community are planning to meet with Utica Mayor Michael P Galime to address their concerns. The community is seeking answers and justice for Nyah Mway’s untimely death.

At a vigil held on Saturday night, Nyah Mway’s brother, Lah, expressed his dissatisfaction with the situation and called for the officers involved to be held accountable for their actions.

Other attendees at the vigil raised questions about the official account of the shooting, with some expressing disbelief at the circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.

According to police reports, Nyah Mway and another 13-year-old boy were stopped on suspicion of being involved in an armed robbery. The body camera footage shows Nyah Mway running away and allegedly pointing a black item at the officers, which they believed to be a handgun.

The officers involved have been placed on administrative leave as investigations continue to determine the sequence of events leading to the fatal shooting.

Under New York law, the attorney general’s office is mandated to investigate all deaths involving law enforcement officers. The Utica Police Department is conducting its own internal investigation to ensure compliance with policies and training protocols.

The tragic incident has deeply affected the community, especially the large population of Myanmar residents in Utica. The Karen ethnic group has a history of conflict with the military regime in Myanmar.

Nyah Mway and his family sought refuge in the United States nine years ago, hoping for a better and safer life. The recent events have raised questions about the safety and security of immigrants in the country.

As the community mourns the loss of Nyah Mway, they continue to seek answers and justice for the teenager whose life was cut short in a tragic encounter with law enforcement.
