Accident – Death – Obituary News : The shooting of a 13-year-old boy in Utica, New York, has sparked outrage and calls for justice after body camera footage was released late Saturday showing the fatal incident. The boy, identified as Nyah Mway, was shot by an officer after he ran from police and pointed a replica handgun at them.

The incident occurred late Friday when officers stopped two 13-year-old boys in connection with an armed robbery investigation. The boys matched the descriptions of the robbery suspects and one of them, Nyah Mway, ran away when officers attempted to pat them down for weapons. Body camera footage shows Nyah Mway pointing the replica handgun at officers as he fled, leading to a chaotic scene.

The officers believed the replica gun was a real handgun and one of them, identified as Patrick Husnay, fired a single shot that struck Nyah Mway in the chest. Despite receiving immediate first aid, Nyah Mway was pronounced dead at Wynn Hospital. The replica gun carried by Nyah Mway was later determined to be a realistic-looking firearm that only fires pellets or BB’s.

The release of the body camera footage has led to public outcry and calls for justice in the community. Nyah Mway, a refugee born in Myanmar and a member of the Karen ethnic minority, was a student at Donovan Middle School. The shooting has raised questions about police tactics and the use of force in situations involving minors.

The Utica Police Department has placed Officers Husnay, Bryce Patterson, and Andrew Citriniti on administrative leave with pay while an internal investigation is conducted. The state attorney general will also open a separate investigation to determine if the shooting was justified.

The shooting has deeply affected the community, with residents and the family of Nyah Mway demanding answers and accountability from the police department. Utica, a city with a significant refugee population, has been rocked by the tragic incident and the implications it has for police-community relations.

Chief Williams expressed his condolences to the family of Nyah Mway and acknowledged the traumatic nature of the incident for all involved. As the investigation unfolds, the community is left grappling with the loss of a young life and the need for transparency and accountability in law enforcement practices..
