Accident – Death – Obituary News : A local community in Utica, New York is reeling after a tragic incident that resulted in the fatal shooting of a 13-year-old Asian American boy, Nyah Mway, on Friday night. Mway, a refugee from Myanmar, was shot by police officers during a foot chase in West Utica.

The incident unfolded when officers were patrolling the area in search of a group of suspects described as Asian males carrying a black firearm, believed to be involved in a series of robberies. Mway and another 13-year-old boy were stopped by the officers around 10 p.m. as they matched the description of the suspects.

According to NPR, body camera footage captured the moment when officers attempted to pat Mway down, prompting him to run away. The officers gave chase to both boys, alleging that they displayed what appeared to be a gun. The situation escalated when the officers shouted “Gun!” before tackling Mway to the ground, leading to the fatal shot being fired.

Despite attempts by an officer to perform chest compressions on Mway, he succumbed to his injuries after being rushed to the hospital. It was later revealed that the “gun” in question turned out to be a pellet gun.

Utica Mayor Michael Galime has extended his condolences to Mway’s family and has promised transparency in the investigation. At a press conference, Galime assured the community that the names of the officers involved would be disclosed soon, urging patience as the investigation unfolds.

Mway’s mother, speaking through an interpreter at the press conference, expressed her anguish and disbelief at the tragic turn of events. A community member translated one of her poignant remarks, “She said she doesn’t want to be in the same room as killers.”

In response to the heartbreaking loss, a GoFundMe page has been set up to support Mway’s family. Described as an “outgoing kid who loved to be outside,” Mway’s sibling highlighted the family’s harrowing journey as refugees and their quest for a better life in America.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of this devastating incident, questions remain unanswered, and the call for justice grows louder. The tragic death of Nyah Mway serves as a stark reminder of the complexities and challenges faced by marginalized communities, sparking a poignant conversation about police accountability and the need for reform.

This heartbreaking incident underscores the importance of transparency, accountability, and justice in ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in our communities. As the investigation continues, the community remains united in seeking answers and demanding justice for Nyah Mway..
