Days after Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) sparked global outrage for placing an injured Palestinian man on the bonnet of an army vehicle, additional Palestinians have now shared similar experiences.

The incident, which occurred in the West Bank city of Jenin, involved a viral video showing a Palestinian detainee, Mujahed Azmi, tied to the hood of an IDF jeep as it passed by two ambulances. This act prompted Israel to state that it was against protocol and that an investigation was underway.

Additional Victims Speak Out

Following the initial video, a BBC investigation uncovered two more individuals who faced the same treatment during an operation in Jabariyat on the outskirts of Jenin. Samir Dabaya, a 25-year-old man currently hospitalised in Jenin, claimed he was shot in the back by Israeli forces and left bleeding on the ground until soldiers arrived.

According to Samir, the soldiers then proceeded to beat him before placing him on the hood of the jeep. Another victim, Hesham Isleit, also alleged being shot and forced onto the same military vehicle.

Firsthand Accounts

Samir described the harrowing experience of being semi-naked and lying on the hood of the jeep while it sped off. Hesham recalled the intense heat of the vehicle, making it feel like fire, as he struggled to hold on due to the searing surface.

Mujahed, who survived the ordeal, shared his disbelief at still being alive after the traumatic incident. He recounted being violently beaten before being tied to the bonnet and thrown onto the moving vehicle.

International Response

The use of a human shield by Israeli forces in this manner has drawn widespread condemnation, with many drawing parallels to similar incidents during the Second Intifada. The practice of using human shields is prohibited by international law.

As the investigation into these incidents continues, the global community remains vigilant in monitoring the treatment of civilians in conflict zones.
