SAN ANTONIO, Texas (KABB) – San Antonio College in Texas has made history by becoming the first educational institution in the United States to house a fully functioning mortuary on its campus.
For over six decades, the mortuary science program at San Antonio College has been offering students a comprehensive education in the field of mortuary science. Established in 1961, the program has equipped students with the knowledge and skills required to pursue a career as a mortician.
In a groundbreaking development this year, San Antonio College unveiled the first-ever mortuary located within a college campus, providing students with a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a real-world setting.
Jonica Fuller, a former student of the mortuary science program, expressed her excitement about the new facility, highlighting the value of experiencing a mortuary environment within an academic setting.

Jennifer Floyd, a licensed funeral director and embalmer, oversees the operations at the college’s mortuary. Students have the opportunity to shadow her and observe the day-to-day workings of a mortuary, gaining valuable insights into the profession.
The mortuary offers a range of services, including direct cremations, cremations with services, memorial services, and traditional funeral services. With facilities such as a crematorium, chapel, preview room, and conference room, the mortuary is equipped to cater to the needs of the community.
Floyd emphasised the significance of the new facility in advancing the field of mortuary science and providing a platform for students to engage in innovative learning experiences.
School leaders believe that the introduction of the mortuary on campus will set a precedent for similar programmes across the country, establishing San Antonio College as a pioneer in the field of mortuary science education.
