Accident – Death – Obituary News : The body of a kayaker who was reported missing near Kootenai Falls in the Libby area last week has been recovered, bringing closure to a tragic incident that has left the community in mourning. Jessica Prado was reported missing in the river at about 8 p.m. on Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Prado and Jared Satterlund were in a two-person kayak that capsized just below China Rapids. Lincoln County Sheriff Darren Short said in a news release that Satterlund tried to help Prado, but he last saw her struggling in an eddy in the river before losing sight of her. They had made arrangements to be picked up above Kootenai Falls. A dog that accompanied them was able to get out of the river along with Satterlund. Searchers eventually found a cooler near the shore above Kootenai Falls and the damaged kayak and other property were recovered below the falls. Sheriff Short said that Prado’s body was found and recovered from the Kootenai River at around 8:45 a.m. on Sunday, June 30.

This marks the fifth confirmed drowning in Montana in recent days, highlighting the dangers of outdoor activities near water. In Lewis & Clark County, a man identified as 71-year-old Danial Francis Gard drowned in the Missouri River near Craig after reportedly going overboard while trying to retrieve an oar. In Glacier County, a 26-year-old woman named Gillian Tones tragically lost her life near St. Mary Falls in Glacier National Park after slipping on wet rocks and being swept away by the fast-moving water. In Flathead County, a fugitive wanted in North Carolina, Steven Jeffrey O’Shields, drowned while fleeing from law enforcement officers. And in Ravalli County, a 76-year-old man named Roger Lee Booth drowned after being thrown from a raft into the Bitterroot River.

In Liberty County, the search continues for 17-year-old Kendall Danna, who went missing while paddle-boarding at Lake Elwell. Despite efforts from multiple agencies and drone operators, Kendall has not yet been found. A GoFundMe has been set up to support her family during this difficult time, as they hold out hope for her safe return.
