The Virginia State Police (VSP) are currently conducting an investigation into a tragic two-vehicle crash that led to a fatality on Friday, as per state police officials.
The incident took place at 4:25 p.m. on Friday on the southbound lanes of I-81 at the 133-mile marker in Roanoke County.
According to authorities, a 1998 International 4700 was heading south when it collided with a 2022 Freightliner tractor-trailer from behind.
The driver of the International truck has been identified as 67-year-old Jerry Mailhoit Sr. from Crossville, Tennessee.
It has been reported that Mailhoit was wearing his seatbelt at the time of the crash. He was airlifted from the scene to Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries later on. The driver of the Freightliner emerged from the incident unharmed.
The VSP continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision to determine the exact cause of the crash.
