The 54-year-old Bass, who was described by Crowley ISD as an outstanding educator and colleague, touched the lives of countless students and staff.

According to a statement from the district, Bass was a dedicated father with a good heart. Following his service in the army, he felt compelled to continue serving by becoming involved with the JROTC program. His son, Michael Bass, shared with NBC5 that his father wanted to be a positive influence on the students, showing them the right way to do things and giving them something to look forward to.

The heartbreaking incident took place on Friday afternoon in the front yard of Bass’ home on Chesapeake Bay Drive. Witnesses reported that a suspect, later identified as Bass’ son Xavier Bass, arrived in a Ford Mustang and brandished a handgun, which he playfully tossed in the air before approaching his father.
