Authorities in Milwaukee have brought charges against a teenager for first-degree reckless homicide in connection with a fatal shooting at Sherman Park. The incident, which took place on June 15, resulted in the death of a 65-year-old man identified as Gary Grose. A second victim was also injured in the shooting and required medical attention.

Details of the Incident

According to the criminal complaint, two suspects were involved in the shooting at Sherman Park. It is still unclear which of the suspects fired the fatal shot that killed Grose. Zechariah Watson Macklin, a 16-year-old, has been charged with first-degree reckless homicide as a party to the crime. The second suspect has not yet been identified.

Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Detective Matthew Vandertie detailed the events that unfolded at Sherman Park on the day of the shooting. Law enforcement agencies, including the sheriff’s office, the Milwaukee Police Department, and the Milwaukee Fire Department, responded to the scene after receiving reports of the incident. Grose was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries shortly after arrival.

Detective Mason Kohlhapp conducted interviews with the victims and witnesses to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the shooting. One of the victims, referred to as “DDD” in the complaint, described a physical altercation between a young individual and a large group of people. DDD and his brother, known as “DD,” intervened to prevent further harm, but gunshots rang out shortly after the altercation ceased.

Security Footage and Suspect Identification

Surveillance video from the Mary Ryan Boys and Girls Club captured the shooting incident and revealed the presence of two shooters. Suspect 1, later identified as Zechariah Watson Macklin, was seen retrieving a gun from an unknown individual and firing shots towards the victims. Suspect 2, who remains unidentified, also discharged a firearm during the incident.

During questioning, Watson Macklin claimed that he acted in self-defence after allegedly spotting an “old man” with a gun. However, no weapon was recovered from the scene to corroborate this claim. Further investigation is ongoing to locate and apprehend the second suspect involved in the shooting.

As the case unfolds, authorities are working diligently to gather evidence and witness statements to ensure justice is served in this tragic incident at Sherman Park.
