In a recent incident in Moncks Corner, a traffic stop by a deputy from the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) resulted in the arrest of an individual with ties to international organized crime.

On a routine patrol of Highway 52 and Highway 402, the deputy noticed a vehicle with a faulty taillight and decided to conduct a traffic stop. Upon approaching the vehicle, the deputy detected the smell of marijuana emanating from the window. The driver, identified as Elmer Neftali Martinez-Escobar, a 31-year-old male, confessed to possessing marijuana inside the vehicle.

Upon running a check through the National Crime Information Center (NCIC) database, it was revealed that Martinez-Escobar had connections to transnational criminal organisations and was a wanted fugitive from El Salvador for homicide. Additionally, the database indicated that he was a member of the notorious Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) gang.

Subsequent to a probable cause search of the vehicle, law enforcement officers discovered a clear plastic bag containing approximately eight grams of marijuana. Martinez-Escobar was promptly arrested and charged with simple possession of marijuana.
