The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office in Ohio reported that a man wanted in connection with a shooting in Miami County has been found dead after taking his own life along Route 35 on June 29.

Details of the Incident

Sheriff Vernon Stanforth stated that the Sheriff’s office received information around 3 AM on June 29 about a shooting suspect from Miami County who was believed to be passing through Fayette County. Deputies located the suspect’s vehicle, a Toyota Tundra, on Route 35 at the Fayette/Greene County line. When law enforcement attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver refused to pull over and continued driving.

After a short pursuit, the vehicle eventually came to a stop. However, the driver did not respond to deputies’ attempts to communicate via loudspeaker. The Ohio Highway Patrol was called in to assist, dispatching a helicopter to the scene. The helicopter pilot was able to hover close enough to the vehicle to see the driver slumped over inside.

Identification of the Driver

Upon approaching the vehicle, troopers and deputies discovered that the driver, 52-year-old Douglas Smith of Troy, Ohio, had died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Smith was wanted in connection with a shooting incident in Miami County, but the details of the case have not been disclosed.

Investigation Ongoing

The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office has stated that the incident remains under investigation. No further details have been released at this time.
