A shocking incident has come to light at Elk Elementary School in Kanawha County, West Virginia, where a teacher’s aide, identified as Deborah Richards, has been charged with assaulting a disabled 3-year-old student. The incident, captured on class surveillance video, has sparked outrage and concern among parents and the community.

According to court documents, troopers responded to the school on June 28 following reports of an assault on a disabled child. Upon reviewing the surveillance footage, authorities witnessed Richards using excessive force against the young student.

The video footage shows Richards forcefully shoving the child away with her leg before pushing him to the floor by placing her hand on his face, causing him to fall back several feet. The child can be seen sitting on the floor in distress, holding his face in pain after the incident.

Despite the child’s obvious distress, Richards did not offer any assistance or comfort. It was only after another teacher intervened that the child received attention and care following the ordeal.

The altercation reportedly began when the child kicked Richards after she removed him from a wheelchair that did not belong to him. The child, who is considered disabled due to his learning disabilities and participation in an individualized education program, was left vulnerable and traumatised by the incident.

Deborah Richards now faces charges of assault on a disabled child, a grave offence that has raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in the school. The authorities have not provided further details about the case, leaving many questions unanswered.

Parents and guardians are urged to remain vigilant and monitor their children’s interactions with school staff to prevent similar incidents from occurring in the future.
